Part 1 is the first of 3 parts that you’ll need to pass to qualify as an ADI, and consists of 2 elements: multiple choice test & hazard perception test.
Multiple-choice test
Duration of test the test is 90 minutes.
Unlimited attempts.
100 multiple choice theory questions to be answered, there are 25 questions in each of the four bands.
You need to score 85% out of 100 questions to pass provided you score a minimum of 80% in each band.
The questions are banded into the following subject groups:
• Road procedure
• Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
• Driving test, disabilities, and the law
• Publications and instructional techniques.
Hazard Perception
The test consists of 14 video clips of developing hazards that could cause you to take action. In each clip, there will be at least 1 developing hazard. One of the clips has two developing hazards.
Each hazard will score you up to 5 points per hazard.
You need to score 57 out of 75 to pass.
This is a home study course, however training support can be provided with the guidance of a dedicated trainer.
This test is of an advanced nature and a very high standard of driving is required.
The test can be done in an automatic or a manual car.
The test lasts about 60 minutes and you are allowed up to 6 driving faults, but no serious or dangerous faults. You’re allowed 3 attempts.
The test consists of five elements:
1. Eyesight check
2. Vehicle safety questions (‘Show me, tell me’)
You’ll be asked 5 questions during the test
3. General driving ability, you’ll have to show the examiner all of the following:
• Expert handling of the controls
• Use of correct road procedure.
• Anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
• Sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
• Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
• Driving in an environmentally friendly manner
You’ll drive in varying road and traffic conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways and rural roads where possible.
You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
4. Manoeuvres, you will be tested on two of the following:
• Reverse into a parking bay and drive out
• Drive into a parking bay and reverse out
• Parallel park at the side of the road
• Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths.
5. Independent driving, you’ll be asked to drive for about 20 minutes by following either:
• Directions from a sat nav
• Traffic signs
Training programme
We recommend 10-14 hours of 1-2-1 in-car coaching sessions for this part.
2 hours of driving ability practice with an expert at Aram Driving School per session.
More private practice is required.
The object of this test is to assess the ability and effectiveness of your instruction and your ability to pass on your knowledge to your pupils.
Marks are awarded by demonstrating competence in 17 areas. This is grouped into three categories:
• Lesson planning
• Risk management
• Teaching and learning strategies
Duration of the test is approximately 60 minutes and you will need to score a minimum of 31 marks to pass, provided you score at least 8 marks on the Risk Management section of the test.
Our trainers hold Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers (ORDIT) & Award in Education Training (AET LEVEL 4). This means that the training and support is of a very high standard to ensure that you’re well prepared for the final exam.
A structured 40 hours training programme is recommended. At end of every session there will be review to discuss your progress.
